Spring break 2026 officially turned us into cruise people.

After years of debating whether cruising was “our thing,” my family and I finally booked our first Norwegian Cruise Line vacation aboard the Norwegian Star for a 4-night Bahamas spring break cruise out of Tampa, Florida.

And honestly? We had WAY more fun than expected.

Now let’s be clear — the Norwegian Star is not one of those gigantic floating cities you see in commercials with roller coasters, racetracks, and approximately 9,000 people fighting over one pool chair.

The Norwegian Star is an older, smaller ship. Built in 2001 and refurbished in 2021, it carries around 2,300 passengers and has a much more relaxed, classic cruise vibe.

And surprisingly… we loved that.

Day 5 — Return to Tampa

Short, easy, sunny, and honestly the perfect “first cruise” itinerary.

Staying in a Club Family Balcony Room on Deck 11

We stayed in a Club Family Balcony stateroom on the 11th floor, and for a family cruise, I would absolutely recommend it.

Having the balcony was huge. There’s something magical about sitting outside early in the morning with coffee while the ocean stretches endlessly around you. It also gave us extra breathing room when everyone needed a little downtime from constant family togetherness.

Cruise parents know exactly what I mean.

The room itself was comfortable, functional, and honestly better than expected for an older ship.

The Unexpected MVP: The Teen Club

One thing I NEVER expected on this trip?

My teenagers actually loving the teen club.

If you’ve ever stayed at all-inclusive resorts with teens, you probably know the teen clubs can be very hit-or-miss. Usually the kids walk in, awkwardly look around for five minutes, then immediately leave to sit on their phones.

Not on this cruise.

The teen club on the Norwegian Star was fantastic, largely because of the staff running it. There was a young Spanish college-aged activities leader who was incredible with the kids and somehow got all these teens interacting instantly.

Our kids made vacation friends almost immediately.

Like… suspiciously fast.

At one point we actually had to remind them we were also on this family vacation and they should probably spend at least a LITTLE time with us.

The activities were genuinely well thought out and age appropriate, and the staff really understood what keeps teens entertained without making it feel forced or cheesy.

As parents, it honestly gave us the best of both worlds:

  • the kids had freedom,
  • they were safe,
  • they were having the time of their lives,
  • and we actually got some relaxing adult time too.

That alone made the cruise worth it.

O’Sheehan’s Irish Pub Became Our Second Home

Without question, our favorite spot onboard was the Irish pub, O’Sheehan’s.

This place was ALWAYS busy and became the unofficial gathering spot of the ship.

It’s open 24 hours, which immediately makes it elite in my opinion.

Whether we needed:

  • late night snacks,
  • a casual breakfast,
  • comfort food,
  • drinks,
  • or just a place to regroup between activities…

we somehow always ended up back at the pub.

The food was very American comfort food with Irish pub vibes, and after long beach days it weirdly felt like home… or at least what I imagine Ireland feels like after mozzarella sticks and fries.

Also worth mentioning:
the Espresso Martini and Cosmopolitan Martini were standout drinks onboard. Dangerous in the best possible way.

Dining & Motion Sickness Warning

The main dining room at the aft (back) of the Norwegian Star had absolutely incredible service.

The staff onboard truly works SO hard, and every meal felt warm and welcoming.

BUT.

If you struggle with motion sickness… maybe avoid dining all the way at the back of the ship.

You could definitely feel the movement back there, especially during rougher water moments. Even people in our group who normally don’t notice ship movement were suddenly gripping bread baskets for emotional support.

So just know that going in.

Entertainment, Bars & The Casino

One thing Norwegian does really well is variety.

There were bars and entertainment options everywhere with different music styles and atmospheres depending on your vibe.

Want live music? Covered.
Want karaoke? Chaos, but covered.
Want to sit quietly with a martini pretending you’re sophisticated? Also covered.

Meanwhile, the casino was PACKED literally every hour of the day.

Morning? Packed.
Midnight? Packed.
Random afternoon while people should probably be outside enjoying the ocean? Still packed.

Apparently cruise casinos operate outside normal concepts of time.

Great Stirrup Cay: Beautiful but VERY Crowded

Our port stop was Great Stirrup Cay, Norwegian Cruise Line’s private island in the Bahamas.

First things first:
the water is every bit as beautiful as the photos.

Bright turquoise water, white sand, palm trees… the full tropical fantasy.

Now for the honest part:
it was VERY crowded.

Because we booked an excursion, we were able to get on one of the first ferry tenders off the ship, which was absolutely worth it. We got prime beach chairs early and had a much calmer experience before the crowds rolled in.

By afternoon, the island was packed.

Everyone was having fun, but you could definitely feel the spring break energy.

That said, I think future crowds may spread out more now that the new water park has opened on Great Stirrup Cay.

Swimming with the Pigs: Worth Every Penny

Without question, the highlight of our entire cruise was the swimming pigs excursion.

We boarded a small boat from Great Stirrup Cay and headed to nearby Treasure Island to swim with pigs and stingrays.

And somehow… the pigs completely stole the show.

These pigs had BIG personalities and honestly acted like tiny island celebrities. The staff made the experience incredible from start to finish, giving everyone tips for photos, feeding, and interactions so we could really enjoy the experience.

It was one of those excursions where you leave thinking:
“Okay, that actually lived up to the hype.”

Beautiful water. Amazing staff. Core family memory unlocked.

We’ll genuinely never forget that day.

Shopping, Frozen Drinks & Island Games

After the excursion, we headed back to Great Stirrup Cay and spent some time shopping with local vendors.

Bonus points because several vendors accepted Apple Pay, which made everything incredibly easy.

No digging through wet beach bags trying to find cash while covered in sunscreen.

Then we headed to the huge lagoon-style pool where we grabbed frozen cocktails and watched the entertainment team organize games between guests from the two cruise ships docked that day.

It was honestly hilarious and fun to watch complete strangers suddenly become aggressively competitive for cruise ship glory.

Also exciting for future Norwegian cruisers:
Great Stirrup Cay now has two docks being used so passengers can walk directly onto the island instead of tendering by boat, which should make the process WAY easier going forward.

Staying in Tampa Before the Cruise

Before sailing, we stayed at the Marriott Tampa Water Street connected to the JW Marriott Tampa.

And this setup was perfect for a cruise vacation.

Because the hotels are connected, guests can enjoy the pools, restaurants, and entertainment across both properties, which made the whole stay feel like an extension of vacation before we even boarded the ship.

The area is also incredibly walkable, with restaurants, waterfront views, and plenty to do nearby.

One of our favorite unexpected adventures was taking Tampa’s free trolley to and from the cruise port.

Was it glamorous? No.
Was it memorable? Absolutely.

Honestly, hauling luggage onto public transportation while trying not to lose family members before a cruise is a bonding experience.

Final Thoughts: Is the Norwegian Star Worth It?

Absolutely yes.

If you’re looking for:

  • a relaxed family cruise,
  • a great first cruise experience,
  • a smaller ship that’s easy to navigate,
  • teen-friendly activities,
  • fun nightlife,
  • and an affordable spring break cruise option out of Tampa…

the Norwegian Star delivers.

No, it’s not the flashiest ship at sea.

But sometimes smaller and simpler is actually better.

We came home relaxed, sunburned, slightly overfed, and already talking about our next cruise.

Which I guess means Norwegian officially got us.

And honestly?
I’m already craving another Espresso Martini at sea.
