I’ll admit it — before this trip, I wasn’t convinced river cruising was “my thing.”
Give me a tropical beach, sunshine, and a frozen cocktail, and I’m usually perfectly happy. But when the opportunity came to experience an AmaWaterways Christmas Market cruise aboard the AmaLea with my college roommate Julie, I decided it was time to step outside my comfort zone.
And now?
I completely understand why people fall in love with river cruising.
This 7-night journey along the Danube River took us through Germany, Austria, and Hungary during the most magical time of year. We explored fairytale towns, wandered through glowing Christmas markets, drank more mulled wine than I care to admit, and experienced Europe in a way that felt immersive, relaxing, and incredibly easy.
For anyone considering a European river cruise — especially during Christmas market season — here’s my honest review of the experience.
Why River Cruising Completely Surprised Me
The biggest thing I didn’t expect? How stress-free everything felt.
We unpacked once and woke up in a new destination almost every day. No airports. No train schedules. No dragging luggage across Europe in winter coats.
Unlike large ocean cruises, the AmaLea felt intimate and relaxed. There were no massive crowds or long lines. The staff quickly learned our names, our favorite drinks, and somehow always seemed genuinely happy to see us.
It felt more like staying at a floating boutique hotel than taking a cruise.
I also loved the pace. Every day included guided excursions and enough free time to explore on our own without feeling rushed or exhausted.
And then there were the Christmas markets…
Every single one felt magical and completely different from the last.
Day 1: Embarkation in Nuremberg, Germany

Stepping onboard the AmaLea for the first time felt surreal.
The ship was beautifully decorated for the holidays, warm and inviting after the chilly German air outside. Julie and I settled into our cabin, explored the ship, and immediately started getting excited for the week ahead.
One thing I noticed right away was how cozy river cruising feels compared to ocean cruising. Everything felt accessible, elegant, and calm.
Day 2: Nuremberg — History, Sausages & Our First Mulled Wine
Nuremberg was cold. Like REALLY cold.
And somehow that made it feel even more magical.
We started the day touring WWII historical sites before wandering through the city’s cobblestone streets. By lunchtime, Julie and I were fully embracing Germany by eating sausages and drinking beer before noon. Honestly, no regrets.
Then came our first official Christmas market experience at the famous Christkindlesmarkt — one of the largest and most famous Christmas markets in the world.
We were handed beautiful souvenir mugs filled with steaming mulled wine, and at that moment it truly felt like Christmas in Europe had officially begun.
One unexpectedly memorable moment was watching the Männleinlaufen Clock Show at Frauenkirche Church in the middle of the market square.
Every day at noon, the intricate clock comes alive, re-enacting the proclamation of the Golden Bull of 1356. Trumpeters, drummers, and electors circle Emperor Karl IV while crowds gather below surrounded by Christmas stalls and holiday music.
It felt like stepping into a storybook.
Day 3: Regensburg — A Fairytale Town

Regensburg ended up being one of my favorite stops of the trip.
This UNESCO World Heritage city felt untouched by time. The medieval architecture, cobblestone streets, glowing lights, and charming shops made the entire city feel like a Hallmark movie set.
This was the day river cruising really clicked for me.
You aren’t just “checking destinations off a list.” You actually get time to experience them. We wandered slowly, explored side streets, browsed shops, sampled local treats, and soaked in the atmosphere without ever feeling rushed.
It was authentic, relaxed, and honestly one of the most enjoyable travel days I’ve had in Europe.
Day 4: Passau & Cruising Through Austria
Passau was beautiful, but this day turned into one of our favorite unexpected decisions of the entire trip.
We had the option to take an excursion to Salzburg — a destination still very high on my travel bucket list — but the forecast called for cold rain all day.
Instead of spending hours on a bus, Julie and I decided to stay onboard and simply enjoy the experience of cruising through Austria along the Danube River.
And honestly? Zero regrets.
While others explored Salzburg in the rain, we spent the afternoon floating in the AmaLea’s heated top-deck pool while castles, villages, church steeples, and rolling hills drifted by around us.
It was peaceful, relaxing, and one of those moments where you suddenly realize how incredible slow travel can be.
That said, Salzburg absolutely remains on my list for a future trip — specifically for Krampusnacht on December 5th.
If you’ve never heard of it, Krampusnacht is a famous Austrian holiday tradition where Krampus accompanies St. Nicholas through the streets of Old Town and Salzburg’s Christmas markets. It sounds festive, bizarre, slightly terrifying, and completely unforgettable.
Basically… my kind of travel experience.
Day 5: Melk & The Wachau Valley — Straight Out of a Snow Globe
Melk was absolutely idyllic.
This tiny Austrian town looked like it belonged inside a Christmas movie. Cobblestone streets, glowing lights, charming little shops, and the breathtaking Melk Abbey towering above everything made it feel incredibly picturesque.
The Christmas market here was smaller and more intimate than the others, which I actually loved. It felt cozy instead of crowded.
Julie and I spent the afternoon wandering through the streets, shopping for gifts, and warming up with hot chocolate between stops.
This was one of those places where the magic wasn’t about checking off attractions — it was simply about being there.
Cruising through the Wachau Valley afterward may have been one of the most relaxing moments of the entire trip. Sitting onboard with warm drinks while tiny villages and castles passed by was unforgettable.
Day 6: Vienna — Big City Energy & A Hilarious Surprise
Vienna immediately felt different from the smaller towns along the Danube.
It was grand, elegant, bustling, and enormous compared to our previous stops.
And we WALKED it.
I’m pretty sure Julie and I hit 20,000 steps before lunch trying to see as much of the city as possible. Between the palaces, Christmas markets, cafés, shopping streets, and incredible architecture, there was something beautiful around every corner.
Then came one of the funniest moments of the trip.
Exhausted from walking, we randomly stopped into a bar to rest our feet and grab a drink… only to realize it was a St. Louis, Missouri-themed bar in the middle of metropolitan Vienna.
Considering Julie is from St. Louis, we absolutely lost it laughing.
Thousands of miles from home, surrounded by imperial Austrian architecture, and somehow we accidentally found Missouri.

Travel really does create the most random and memorable moments.
Day 7: Budapest — The Perfect Finale

Budapest completely exceeded my expectations.
This city had incredible energy — stunning architecture, vibrant streets, amazing food, and some of the most beautiful scenery of the entire trip.
We started our morning dining outdoors under heaters while bundled up in gloves eating fresh Lángos, which quickly became one of my favorite foods from the cruise.
There was something so fun about embracing the cold weather while eating local comfort food in the middle of one of Europe’s most beautiful cities.
The rest of the day was spent wandering through both Buda and Pest, taking photos, exploring Christmas markets, and soaking in every final moment of the trip.
Then we wrapped up the journey with a late afternoon meal at Wolfgang Puck’s Spago Budapest, which felt like the perfect celebratory ending to an unforgettable week.
And of course, seeing Budapest illuminated at night from the river was one of the most breathtaking moments of the entire cruise.
The Parliament building glowing along the Danube is something I’ll never forget.
So… Would I Take Another River Cruise?
Absolutely. Without hesitation.
This trip completely changed my perspective on river cruising.
What surprised me most was how perfectly it combines comfort, culture, convenience, and immersive travel experiences without the stress that often comes with traveling through Europe independently.
I think river cruising is especially perfect for travelers who:
- Want to visit multiple countries without constantly unpacking
- Love history, food, culture, and local experiences
- Prefer smaller, more personal travel experiences
- Want Europe to feel relaxing instead of overwhelming
- Love Christmas markets and holiday travel
And yes… even this beach-loving traveler is already looking at another river cruise itinerary.
If a European Christmas market river cruise has ever been on your bucket list, consider this your sign to go.
And now that I’ve experienced it firsthand, I’d absolutely love to help you plan your own unforgettable river cruise adventure.
