6 Excursions that made my Honeymoon AMAZING!

I book A LOT of Honeymoons.  I get asked all the time, “Ok- expert, what did you do on your Honeymoon?!”  My answer, “A little of everything.”

excursions on my honeymoon

Our Panama Canal Cruise

We started in Miami, went through the Panama Canal, and ended up in San Diego with numerous stops along the way. We were on the Royal Caribbean Radiance of the Seas for a 14 night trip that was quite unforgettable.   Our days on board were filled with big meals, daiquiris by the pool, and black jack all night.  Our days off the ship were filled with adventure.  My travel tip: get off the boat and do something memorable.

A cruise of this length is not to be taken lightly. It’s a long time on a ship!  Though it is so nice to do this much traveling without having to cart your luggage from place to place.  I really enjoyed cruising the Panama Canal.  It was like doing an excursion on the boat.  It took an entire day to get through all three locks of the canal.  The history and engineering are fascinating. The beauty of the rain forest on both sides of the ship was amazing.  You wait in line most of the day to get from lock to lock so cruising the canal is at an extremely slow speed.  It was super hot but nothing a pina colada couldn’t fix!  The best part was leaving the last lock.  There were people in buildings cheering us on as we made our way to the Pacific.  Even though I just sat by the pool all day and watched the marvel from a short distance, I still felt a sense of accomplishment.  We made it!

We made the most of the time we had off the ship.  We did an excursion at every stop.  There is so much relaxing to do on the boat, we were fired up to take advantage of the adventure of it all.

1- First stop, Aruba.  Jeep tours of the countryside are the best way to see the island.  Heading out on the rough terrain after only being in the country for a mere half hour is quite an adventure.  We did a lot of driving over this 8 hour tour though we saw a lot too!  Stopped at some historical sites and ruins.  Saw the world’s largest natural bridge that disappointingly fell one month before we were there.  Though still amazing to see the size of it.  We stopped for lunch and hit up some snorkeling.  Finally wrapped it up at the infamous Carlos & Charlie’s, for yard glasses of tropical drinks.  All in all, the jeep experience was fun and Aruba is definitely on my list to travel to again soon!

2- Next stop, Costa Rica.  Zip lining is the ultimate in day trips.  There are few other excursions that can compare in the adrenaline rush you get from sliding from tree to tree at dangerous heights.  The scenery was incredible, lush green rain forest.  Experiencing the wild life up close in their world was amazing.  I loved this exact zip line tour because it offered numerous lines, I think up to 16, with the last one bringing you to the ground.  As you untangle yourself from the line, you are stepping out of the forest onto the beach.  I think I was just in shock at that point, the rush and the beauty of the beach was unforgettable.

3- After two rustic tours at our last two stops, after an entire day getting through the locks of the Panama Canal, we arrive in Panama City.  Wow! What a city it is!   We took the short tender over to walk the marina to see what we can see.  To our surprise, yachts and fancy restaurants were a plenty.  We spent the night eating and drinking and taking in the ocean breeze.  It took us so long to get through the locks we only had a few hours to indulge.  It was well worth getting off the boat and taking the tender.  Panama was a pleasant surprise.  Panama is on the way up in the travel industry also, with new hotels opening all the time.  Can’t wait to go back!

4- Time to take on the Pacific coast of Mexico!  Huatulco is cliffs, crashing waves, and certainly off the beaten path.  We walked the pier, saw the beach town, and then took a double-decker boat ride to view the cliffs up close and celebrity homes.  Unfortunately for us, it was a rainy day though the sites were still beautiful.  There is so much more to see of this area, hopefully we will make it back soon 🙂

5- Acapulco was a busy day!  We started our morning swimming with the dolphins in a water park in downtown Acapulco.  I wanted to be a dolphin trainer when I grew up so I was like a little girl in a candy shop.  Even though we did the dolphin swim in a pool with older dolphins, I think it was a great experience and treasure the memory and pictures we have from it.  We were also able to take advantage of the water park and rides.  I really don’t think they have the same safety guidelines as our water parks, so it made it that much more of an adventure!  We headed back to the ship for a quick outfit change, and then hailed a cab to the cliff divers.  It is the “IT” attraction in Acapulco and is well worth it.  Acapulco is such a classic town. You can see why Frank Sinatra liked it so much.

6- Our last and favorite stop in Mexico, Cabo!  We took the tender and headed right to the beach to rent wave runners.  If you have been to Cabo, you know that stretch of beach, that the cruise boats stop at it, is not for swimming.  Saying that you could just imagine how rough the waters are for wave runners.  It is the best way to view the rock islands.  We were able to get up close and personal with the sea lions, which was really fun.  After drying off we headed downtown to Cabo Wabo to relieve our back pain from the waves with a couple tequila shots.  It was Cinco de Mayo, so it was fitting 🙂  LOVE Cabo, I would own property here 🙂

There you have it!  Excursions are an amazing way to get active during the day to make the night even that more romantic.  I have a ton of ideas to make your Honeymoon special and memorable.  Give me a ring!

Renew Your Passport Now

Friendly Reminder-Renew Your Passport Now
Passport Expiring Soon? Renew It Now

If you have a United States passport expiring any time in 2016 or 2017, the State Department has a message: Renew it now. The department anticipates a surge in passport demand throughout this year as a flood of renewals of 10-year passports issued in 2006 and 2007. This is when the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative went into effect, for the first time requiring passports for Americans returning by air from Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean and Bermuda.

If you already have a passport, be sure to see how much longer it’s valid. Your passport is valid for 10 years, but remember that your children’s passports are only valid for 5 years. Many countries require that your passport have 6 months of validity on it when you enter the country.  So if your passport expires in 5 months and you plan to travel, that won’t work. You need to renew!

Start the process now.  It’s easy.  Click here to go directly to the US Passport Website.

Raving Review of Paradisus La Esmeralda

Raving Review

The Turner Family’s Review of Paradisus La Esmeralda

When I first contacted Amy, I asked her the most vague question about vacations that you can probably ask. She quickly got me on track and helped us find a perfect resort for our first time traveling with our young family. We had no idea how to get started. We have three toddlers (ages 4,3, and 1 year old at the time) and had never stayed more than a night or two with them somewhere, much less flown on a plane. Amy helped us every step of the way from passports for the kids to all the details of the various resorts. When we started with her, she quickly got back to me with a few different ideas for resorts, with prices, room types, flights. While we narrowed down what we wanted, she remained available and answered all our questions very promptly. Just when we thought we had our destination picked, I asked her to check out one more place for me, The Paradisus La Esmeralda in Playa Del Carmen. Boy are we glad she did! She helped us book a fantastic family vacation! She set up all our transfers, cribs, and family concierge. She answered all my questions and when I was feeling nervous, she helped to allay my fears. She gave me great tips for traveling with kids. Her help did not end once we booked the trip either. She was in contact with us before the trip with tips and reminders. She even had a bottle of wine waiting for us in our room when we arrived! She even checked in with us via email when we were there. We had a problem with our transfers being late and she reached out to Funjet and got us credit for our next trip! She was so easy to work with and there is no doubt I will be calling her again to help me with another vacation.

The resort itself was amazing. Family friendly on one side and adults only on the other, it has something for everyone. We decided to book the Family Concierge option. This gave us a butler that we could reach anytime by a phone that was provided to us at check in. Also, there was a dedicated Family Concierge building with its own check-in area and always stocked with snacks and drinks (and smelled amazing because of fresh flowers everywhere!). This was right next to the Family Concierge pool that was heated with a swim up bar. Our butler met with us shortly after check in and got us anything we needed. They left a treat in the room every night for the kids. The tub was outside the room on the balcony and one night they came and made a big bubble bath with balloons for the kids. We felt like royalty. They handled all the dinner reservations for us. We were very spoiled. I would recommend the Paradisus La Esmeralda to anyone with kids. I would recommend Destinations by Amy to get you there!

What to Expect at the Punta Cana International Airport PUJ

When you take the plunge and decide to plan your dream wedding in sunny Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, there are many things to consider. One of the biggest priorities with the couples I talk with is the comfort and safety of their guests. Many destination wedding guests are seasoned travelers, while others need to apply for a passport for the first time. Their needs vary since they are often elderly grandparents, young flower girls and everyone in between. One question I am often asked is, “What will their airport experience be like when they arrive in Punta Cana?” Read on to learn all you need to know about the Punta Cana International Airport PUJ (link: http://www.puntacanainternationalairport.com/index.php)

Upon arrival at the airport, you head down a flight of stairs off the plane to board an air conditioned bus. For passengers who need special assistance, they should work with the airline to make sure the airline knows they will need a wheelchair, a lift instead of stairs (departing from the opposite side of the plane). This process is relatively quick and painless.

The bus drops you off at the modern, clean and air conditioned Punta Cana International Airport PUJ. Passengers who have printed off their Tourist Card (link: http://www.dgii.gov.do/tarjetaTuristica/en/about/Paginas/default.aspx) should proceed through the line following the green signs. This tourist card is required for each passenger (even kids) and it is a big time savings to purchase ahead of time online using the link above. If you didn’t purchase this $10 per person card in the States and bring a printed copy with you, then follow the majority of people to a counter where you’ll need $10 USD cash to pay for a card for each person in your group on site.

You’ll then proceed through immigration services and this is a familiar process where you’re asked how long you’ll be staying, etc. Here, you’ll turn in the very detailed form you had to fill out on the plane. I always feel like I am doing something wrong when I stand there and they give me the “once over” look, but stand with confidence – you’re just going on vacation!

Once through immigration, just follow other passengers through the gift shop and pick up your bags at the carousel. Be prepared to show your baggage ticket you received from the airline when you checked in as sometimes airport attendants check them when you leave the carousel area. Politely refuse the porters there who try to help you with your bags. They want to help you secure your ground transportation (or purchase a timeshare) and you should already have this booked.

Walk with your bags through customs (international guests do not need to wait in the queue on the left). Continue, following the signs, to the counters where your ground transportation awaits. Mine on this most recent trip was with AmStar and I looked for their nametags and the sign with my name on it. From there they led us through the parking lot to our van and we were off to our resort – The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana. Check out my review here!

I passionately love traveling and helping others plan the trips of their dreams. I’ve been all over the globe, from Ho Chi Minh city to El Alto Bolivia. I’ve seen a lot of airports and Punta Cana is one of the nicest, easiest to navigate and friendly. I’d love to hear your experience was in the airport. Email me at kate@destinationsbyamy.com.

Hard Rock Punta Cana Review

Hard Rock Punta Cana

My experience at Hard Rock Punta Cana was pretty close to amazing! After leaving Chicago Midway on a direct Southwest flight, flying into Punta Cana International airport was stunningly beautiful. Mountains divide the island, separating the DR from Haiti, and the water is highlighted by golden beaches as you look down from the sky. The airport is newly renovated, and it is easy to follow the crowd through customs and immigration. If you purchased your tourist card online before leaving, you can follow the green signs to a shorter line. Otherwise, you’ll need $10USD per person to buy a tourist card.

The little band of travel agents I was traveling with found our Blue Partner Travel Services representatives after baggage claim by walking out and then to the left. They were easy to find and completely professional. After being whisked to an air conditioned shuttle bus we were off to the Hard Rock (took about 20 minutes)! So, approximately 6 hours after leaving Chicago Midway airport, I was standing in the groups lobby at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. Pretty fantastic!

In the groups lobby, we were met with a lovely, cold fruity beverage while we each checked in. The scale and drama of both the groups and main lobby are gorgeous. Especially pay attention the cool light fixtures everywhere – one chandelier is made completely out of guitar amp cables.

I opened the door to my Islander Junior Suite (#3300) and felt right at home. Chocolate, wine and a rose welcomed me to the suite and I was immediately drawn to the two person tub near the balcony. John Lenon and Yoko Ono are painted on a massive scale abstract over the tub! The bathroom was huge, the bed was extremely comfortable and overall the design was exactly what you would expect from the Hard Rock. I was pleasantly surprised at how big my balcony was.

All the rooms I saw were fantastic – if you’re looking at the lead category room or close to it, I have to say it’s a toss up between the Caribbean Suite and the Islander Junior Suite – both are fantastic rooms. I think I prefer the layout of the Caribbean Suite. I saw a Signature Family suite, and a 2 bedroom Presidential Suite which were all spacious and uniquely decorated. The rooms were impeccably clean and the mini bars full.  I loved the chicken quesadillas and burger off the room service menu.

The food at the Hard Rock Punta Cana. Oh the food. If you’ve traveled to Punta Cana before you’ll understand when I say I wasn’t expecting food to be delicious. But at this resort, every meal I had was excellent. One night we were treated to seared octopus salad, fresh salmon stuffed with shrimp and a filet. Our group had a fantastic time at the Zen restaurant where our server entertained us at a hibachi table with flames, food tosses, knife juggling and yelling every so often, “Yaya Baby!!” Seriously, you guys, the food was great. I especially loved Pizzeto, Isla for lunch, and Toro for dinner. The buffets were delicious and there was more than enough options for picky kids (like mine!). And I was impressed at how accommodating they were to gluten allergies, vegetarians and those with seafood allergies in our group.

The pools and beach at Hard Rock Punta Cana were clean, beautiful and each had a different personality. The hotel was at 65% occupancy when I was there and I can tell you there were maybe 25 people on the entire beach. The waves are quite strong and difficult to swim in. However, they built a breaker wall in front of one section of beach and the waves are lessened there, though the current is still strong. This September there was no seaweed issue at all that has been plaguing other parts of the Caribbean.

The pools had different types of music, different layouts, and so many ways to  relax or play. For those who want entertainment and games like volleyball, the main pools in the center of the property was great. For others, like myself, who enjoy peace and quite and adults-only experience when away from the family, the pool in front of Isla did the trick. The children’s pools are so fun – there is a giant play structure, two tall tube slides and splash pools (and a lazy river)! They are so entertaining that the kids and families stay in that area, leaving the rest of the resort in effect, adults-only.

The nightlife at Hard Rock Punta Cana was fun and definitely appealed to a younger, later crowd. It’s important to know that Oro, the nightclub located in the casino has cover charges and requires $500 bottle purchase to reserve a table. They also admit guests from off property to this club. It was really well-done, though, and if you’re into clubbing and dancing, it’s a great option. Since it’s in the casino, you can completely ignore it if you don’t want to participate. The casino was fun and full almost every time I visited. Smoking is allowed in the casino so stop at the gift shop and buy a Dominican cigar, or, if you’re not a smoker, be prepared to second-hand smoke everyone else’s.

The other bars and lounges are open to hotel guests only and provided great fun doing karaoke and hosting live cover bands. I may or may not have embarrassed myself doing karaoke and there may or may not be a video of this somewhere…

The Spa at Hard Rock Punta Cana is large and beautifully appointed. When I walked through, they were training their staff and everyone was extremely professional. There is enough room for a bridal party to have up to 8 women getting their hair done at the same time, and room for that many or more to have mani/pedis in the spa. The Hydrotherapy Circuit was so refreshing and I highly recommend it. The best is you can use resort credit for spa treatments and more.

Limitless Resort Credit is a great highlight of the Hard Rock Properties. Depending on how many nights you book, you can receive up to $1800 in credit per room. This can be used for excursions like horseback riding and all-day snorkeling/island adventures, as well as golf at the Jack Nicklaus golf course on site. The only catch is you pay 20% of the cost of the service. (Example: Horseback riding is about $90 per person, you would pay 20% of that so $18 per person). This is a really great benefit. I remember seeing that a round of golf ends up costing around $40 per person (using resort credit) for the cart, green fees, and all food and beverages. You do have to bring your own clubs and shoes.

12017502_907127039336531_508996472671314089_oAs a Destination Wedding specialist, I was so thrilled to see the beautiful Weddings Offices and set ups at Hard Rock Punta Cana. The staff were always busy and extremely friendly. The way Hard Rock sets up their weddings, with all the planning done through a coordinator in Miami, then on-site at the hotel about a month before the wedding, is just plain smart. The Colin Cowie set ups, including chairs flowers and accessories are all on full view in the offices. I saw a couple of beach set ups for weddings and they were gorgeous and set about 50 yards away from the main beach and pool areas. If you’re looking for a fantastic wedding location, this could be a wonderful option to consider.

It’s important to know that this is a HUGE property and would not be a good pick for guests who have a hard time getting around or for couples wanting an intimate get away on a smaller property. It is worth staying close to the kids pools if you have a family, otherwise you’ll be walking 15 minutes across the property every time you want to go the pool. The shuttles do come every 5-10 minutes and this is a great option. But given the size of the resort and the fact that the lobby is so far from the beach, there is not much of a Caribbean, intimate feel. It feels big.

All in all, I was impressed by how the Hard Rock Punta Cana offers something for everyone. The gorgeous wedding set ups and unique (and easy!) planning process plus the included events for wedding guests are second to none. Kids love it, teens love hanging out in the ice cream shop with air hockey tables or The Cavern club room, the newly renovated Kids’ Club offers parents a break while kids play with Barney and Bob the Builder, and adults of all ages appreciate the beautiful blue waters of the beach and the 13 on-site pools. And with golf, casino and night club entertainment, an amazing spa, and all the excursions you can book using your limitless resort credit, the fun just keeps going.
